WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHAVE ICE AND SNOW CONES? This is one of the most commonly asked questions. Shave ice and snow cones are both an ice product topped with a flavored syrup and typically served in a cup, but ther eare differences between the equipment used and the final product. *SHAVE ICE* (sometimes called Hawaiian ice or snow-balls) is produced by a machine that shaves the ice so fine and light (snow like) that the syrup sticks to the snow and you eat it with a spoon. Because the ice is very fine it will melt a lot faster than a Snow Cone. Shave ice can be made from either cube ice or block ice. High production shave ice machines can shave up to 500 pounds of ice per hour. Ice shavers do not have a display area - the product is dispensed directly into the cup. Individual servings of shaved ice can retail for more than double the price of a snow cone serving (based on average 1/2 pound serving of ice). Based on an average retail sales price of $2.50, profit margin will be almost 90%. A SNOW CONE is made by a machine that grinds the ice to create a coarse and chunky ice pellet-type product. When topped with an ounce of special sno-kone syrup it goes to the bottom creating what is about the world's coldest most refreshing drink. Snow cone machines are not as costly as the ice shavers. Most snow cone machines have a display case. To operate, simply lift the pusher handle, fill with chunks of ice, turn on the motor and pull the handle. You can vary the fineness of the finished snow by using colder ice, putting less pressure, or setting the blades to shave more finely. A snow cone machine uses cube ice only. Based on an average retail sales price of $1.50, profit margin will be almost 90%. Using 40 pounds of of cube ice makes approximately 120 six (6) ounce snow cone cups. Keep in mind that ice melts and yields will vary depending on the temperature.
