SELECTING A SNOW CONE MACHINE

Help purchasing your first snow cone machine.

A snow cone machine can be a great choice for any type of concession stand or as a stand-alone business. Kids (and adults) love them and that can also make snow cones a hit for entertaining at family-friendly events. You use the machine to grind up the ice, scoop it out & into a cup - then add some flavored syrup and serve a delicious refreshing low-fat treat.

Shave Ice or Snow Cones - What is the Difference?

SNOW CONES are made by a machine that grinds the ice-cubes (bag ice) to create a coarse and slightly crunchy, snowy product. Most snow cone machines have a display case and cost much less than a comparable shave ice machine. You scoop out the snow and put it into a cup - then it is covered with syrup flavoring. Snow Cone machines are very popular for schools, churches, fundraisers and rental companies.

SHAVE ICE sometimes called Hawaiian ice or sno-balls are produced by a machine that shaves the ice into very fine, fluffy and light snow. Shave ice machine models are available for either bag ice or block ice. Shave ice machines do not use a display case and the product is dispensed directly into the serving cup. This product is also covered with syrup flavoring, as well as many other fun toppings too like real fruit, sweet cream (condensed milk) or even ice cream.

Snow Cone Machine Basics

There are plenty of machines available for making snow cones. Most models are electric, but we also have battery snow cone machines as well as gasoline machines for people who will be using their machines at locations that do not have access to electricity.

Our lower cost snow cone machines are designed for utility, not cosmetic appeal. To help keep costs down, many of these models will have very basic cabinet designs, plastic windows and are usually not furnished with a rear access door. Ice is still accessed from the back of the snow cone maker, but there is no door in place. As prices increase, the snow cone machines will typically have more heavy-duty construction methods along with added options and features (i.e. glass windows, cup holders, built-in drip tray/drainage systems, doors, etc).

Most models have cast-aluminum components and stainless steel cutting blades. The cabinets are usually stainless steel and aluminum construction designed to withstand heavy commercial use. Some models incorporate a colorful back-lit sign and a lighted interior serving compartment to provide an attractive display setting for increased impulse buying and operator ease (the 1911 Sno-Storm and Blizzard sno cone machine both have these features standard, as well an an included cup dispenser).

Typical snow cone machine shown above is for reference only.

You will also see that some models like the Snow Blitz, Shavette and the Port-A-Blast snow cone machine do not have a display case. Instead, these machines come with a bin (basin) to catch the snow. If you do not need the visual impact of the display area, this can be a great way to make snow cones and save money on the purchase of your snow cone machine. In most cases these models will make as much snow as any other machine - just without the display case box below.

What Else Do You Need?

When you are ready to purchase for your first snow cone machine, remember that you will need the following items (other than the snow cone machine itself):

Snow cone machines use bag ice (ice cubes) - no ice, no snow cones. Bag ice is typically sold in an 8-lbs bag and based on the standard 6 ounce snow cone cup, you should be able to get about 25-30 servings per 8-lbs of ice cubes. Keep in mind that ice melts and your yields will vary according to temperature, handling, blade settings and other environmental factors. You will need a cooler (ice box/ice caddy) or freezer to store your ice in.

Snow Cone Syrup Flavoring

Great tasting snow cone syrups are available as a concentrate (requires adding sugar and water) or ready to use. Concentrates will cost less to make and much less for shipping, but involve an extra step for preparation. Professional operators prefer concentrates for lower food cost and quality control (shipping costs will also be significantly less with concentrates).

We have economical Ready to Use Snow Cone Syrup (RTU) which are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. This is a less expensive sweetener and the savings are passed on to you. Packed four gallons of one flavor per shipping carton.

Our premium Ready to Use Syrup Flavors are the highest quality snow cone flavors available and are sold each with no case quantity minimum purchases required. Sugar Free version available too (limited flavors).

Snow Cone Cups You can't serve snow cones without cups so make sure you have a cup that is strong enough to handle the ice syrup and will not fall apart or leak in your customer's hands or all over their clothes.
